The lawn looked fine. It didn’t smell fine.

When we pulled up to this Baldivis property, the artificial turf looked reasonable from the street. A bit flat in patches, some discolouration near the back fence — but nothing that would make a neighbour stop and stare. The homeowner knew exactly what the problem was. Three years of daily use by two dogs had saturated the infill with uric acid crystals. On a warm afternoon, you could smell it before you reached the back gate.

Dog urine soaks straight through, and once it dries in the rubber crumb layer, it forms hard, insoluble uric acid crystals that off-gas ammonia every time the sun warms the surface. What the job looked like before we started

The lawn was approximately 28 m² — a standard suburban backyard in Baldivis, running along the back of the house to a Colorbond fence. Stage 1 — Deep Debris Clear with the Roll&Comb 502E-AU

We started with the Roll&Comb 502E-AU — a commercial electric brushing machine with a 40L collection bag and 40cm working width. The machine’s counter-rotating brushes sweep down into the pile and extract debris that has worked its way below the fibre tips.

On this Baldivis lawn, the collection bag filled once across the 28 m² surface. The debris that came out — fine grit, leaf fragments, compacted organic matter — is what prevents enzyme treatment from working when applied without a prior clean. Organic debris deactivates enzyme cultures before they can reach the uric acid crystals in the infill. This is why DIY enzyme products consistently underperform: the product is neutralised before it reaches the problem.

Stage 2 — Fibre Lift & Rejuvenation

The Roll&Comb simultaneously combs and lifts the pile as it works across the surface. By the end of the first pass, the difference was already visible — fibres that had been pressed flat for years were standing upright again, the lawn looking noticeably fuller and greener.

Lifted fibres also matter for the enzyme treatment that follows. When the pile is compressed flat, treatment sits on the fibre tips rather than penetrating to the infill depth where the crystals are bonded. The fibre lift opens the surface and allows full penetration — the difference between treatment that reaches the problem and treatment that doesn’t.

Stage 3 — Bio-Enzyme Urine Treatment

We applied P-Off bio-enzymatic cleaner at the correct dilution across the full surface. P-Off is an Australian-made professional formula containing live enzyme cultures that specifically target uric acid, urea, and odour-causing bacteria. The enzymes digest the uric acid crystals at molecular level — converting them into water and carbon dioxide. Permanent elimination, not masking.

For this Baldivis property, the concentrated zones near the fence and back door received a double application, worked in with a soft brush to ensure penetration to infill depth in the heaviest-use areas.

Stage 4 — Rinse Down

The final rinse-down flushes the enzyme treatment through the full depth of the infill, activating penetration and clearing residue from the surface. The enzymes continue working as the lawn dries. On a warm Baldivis morning, the surface was dry and safe for the dogs within 10 minutes of finishing.

No bleach, no harsh chemicals, no synthetic biocides. Every product used is biodegradable and pet-safe. The client’s two dogs were back on the lawn before we’d packed up the equipment.

The result

The lawn was unrecognisable by the time we left. Fibres upright across the full surface, even colour, no debris visible. The ammonia smell — noticeable from the back door on warm mornings — was completely eliminated.
