Perth summer + dog urine on synthetic grass

Perth summer + dog urine on synthetic grass = a serious ammonia smell problem

In WA heat, urine crystals bake deep into the infill. Hosing won't fix it. Vinegar won't fix it. Professional enzyme treatment will.

Before & After
Artificial Grass Cleaning Perth Homeowners Can Actually Smell the Difference In

Real before-and-after results from residential backyards in Baldivis, Rockingham and Port Kennedy.

Before After

One visit. Three years of dog smell — gone..

This Baldivis backyard had never been professionally cleaned. The fibres were flat, the infill was saturated with uric acid crystals, and on a warm afternoon you could smell it before you opened the back door.

One 4-stage clean later: fibres upright, odour completely gone. No smell on the day, no smell two weeks later when we checked back.

Before After Artificial Grass Cleaning - Before TreatmentArtificial Grass Cleaning - After Treatment

The back fence area was the worst. Now it's the cleanest part of the lawn.

Two large dogs, same patch of turf every day. The urine build-up near the back fence was so concentrated the area was genuinely unusable in summer heat.

After enzyme treatment and a full rinse down, the odour was eliminated completely — not reduced, gone. Surface sanitised, dogs back on within the hour.

Baldivis
"Three years of dog use on our Baldivis backyard and it got to the point where you couldn't sit outside on a warm evening. Rob did the full 4-stage clean and enzyme treatment, and honestly I couldn't believe the difference. Zero smell. Booked him back for six months' time."

Rockingham
"Hygiene is really important with kids playing on it every day. We knew the turf smelled but didn't realise how bad until the treatment was done. The machine did an incredible job lifting the fibres too — looks like new turf. Highly recommend to any dog owner in the Rockingham area."
Jennifer M.
Jennifer M.
Port Kennedy
Already use Rob for windows and solar. He mentioned the turf service — lawn hadn't been cleaned since it was laid four years ago. The amount of stuff the machine pulled out was eye-opening. Lawn looks great and the rinse down left it completely fresh.
Our Process
Synthetic Grass Cleaning Perth — Our 4-Stage Method

Most competitors do 2 steps. We do 4 — and the sequence matters. Each stage prepares the surface for the next one to work properly.

See It in Action
Watch a Perth South Backyard GET RESTORED

This is what the machine actually pulls out of a lawn that looks clean from the outside. Real job, real backyard, Perth south. Watch the full 4-stage process start to finish.

  • See the debris extracted from a lawn that looked fine before we started
  • Watch completely flat fibres brushed back to upright in one pass
  • See enzyme treatment applied and soaking to infill depth
  • Full before-and-after in under 60 seconds

1 - Deep Debris Clear

The Roll&Comb 502E-AU sweeps leaves, dust, grit, and pet hair into a 40L collection bag. It extracts debris that's worked its way down between the fibres — the surface must be clean before enzymes can work.

2 - Fibre Lift & Rejuvenation

The machine simultaneously combs and lifts the pile. Flat, matted fibres crushed by foot traffic and pets are mechanically restored to an upright position — the way they looked when first installed.

Result

Lawn looks fuller, greener, and years younger. Lifted fibres also allow enzyme treatment to penetrate to infill depth.

2

3 - Bio-Enzyme Urine Treatment

We apply a professional bio-enzymatic cleaner across the full surface. Enzyme cultures target uric acid crystals, urea, and odour-causing bacteria — breaking them down at molecular level. Permanent elimination, not masking.

Product

Bio-enzymatic formula (P-Off or equivalent). Pet-safe, biodegradable, targets uric acid at infill depth — not just surface.

3

4 - Rinse Down

A thorough rinse-down flushes the enzyme treatment through the full depth of the infill, activating penetration and clearing any residue from the surface. This is what locks in the result — the enzymes keep working as the lawn dries.

The difference

Pets and kids back on in 10 minutes. No chemicals sitting on the surface, no bleach, no harsh residue. Just a clean, sanitised lawn.

Happy dog
Back on the lawn in 10 minutes.

Pet-safe products throughout. No bleach, no harsh chemicals. Your dog won’t even know we were there — except the lawn smells better than it ever has.

The Science Behind the Smell
Pet Urine Removal from Artificial Grass — Why Hosing Doesn't Work
🧬

The Uric Acid Problem

When a dog urinates on artificial turf, the urine soaks through the fibres and into the rubber crumb or sand infill below. As it dries, it forms uric acid crystals — hard, insoluble compounds that bond to the infill and backing. These crystals are the actual source of the ammonia smell.

Water dilutes them temporarily, but the crystals remain. Vinegar neutralises the surface pH briefly but doesn't break down the crystal structure. Commercial "odour eliminators" and fragranced sprays sit on top of the surface. In Perth's summer heat, the crystals off-gas ammonia again — which is why the smell always comes back worse in January.

The only thing that permanently works is enzymatic degradation. Bio-enzymatic cleaners contain live cultures that produce enzymes targeting uric acid and urea. These enzymes digest the crystals, converting them into water and carbon dioxide — permanently eliminating the source of the odour, not masking it.

⚙️

Why Professional Application Beats DIY Products

Off-the-shelf enzyme products work — but their effectiveness depends entirely on dwell time, dilution ratio, and surface preparation. Most homeowners apply them to a dirty surface, where organic debris deactivates the enzyme cultures before they can reach the uric acid crystals in the infill.

Our process clears all surface debris first with the Roll&Comb machine, then applies enzyme treatment at the correct dilution to a clean, open surface — allowing full penetration to the infill depth where the crystals are. This is the difference between a product that works and one that seems to do nothing.

Artificial Turf Cleaning Perth —
FAQs

Yes — and it’s worth being specific about why. The ammonia smell from dog urine on artificial turf comes from uric acid crystals that form when urine dries in the rubber crumb infill. These crystals are insoluble, which means water, vinegar, and surface sprays don’t break them down — they dilute or temporarily cover them.

The bio-enzymatic treatment we apply contains live enzyme cultures that specifically target uric acid and urea. The enzymes digest the crystals at molecular level — permanently eliminating the source of the smell. We then rinse the lawn down thoroughly as the final stage, flushing the treatment through the full depth of the infill and clearing any residue from the surface.

The critical difference from DIY enzyme products: we clear the entire surface with the Roll&Comb first, so the enzyme treatment reaches infill depth where the crystals are — not just sits on surface debris.

Our service starts from $195 for lawns up to 30 m², including the complete 4-stage treatment: debris extraction, fibre lift, bio-enzyme urine treatment, and rinse down. GST included — no extras on the day.

For areas larger than 30 m² we charge an additional $4.50 per m². Send us a photo if you’re unsure of the size and we’ll estimate it and quote same-day. Most residential backyards in Baldivis, Rockingham and Port Kennedy fall in the 25–50 m² range.

Most jobs take 45–90 minutes depending on size and condition. You don’t need to be home — just gate access and a tap point. We message you when done and send a photo of the finished result. Many clients have us complete the job while they’re at work.

All products we use are bio-enzymatic, non-toxic and biodegradable — formulated specifically for pet environments. No bleach, harsh chemicals, or synthetic biocides anywhere in the process.

In WA conditions the surface is typically dry and safe within 30–60 minutes of the final treatment. We’ll advise on the safe return time depending on weather that day.

For a household with dogs in Perth’s hot climate, we recommend once a year minimum — with many clients in Rockingham and Baldivis opting for every 6 months during the hot season. Multiple dogs, shaded lawns, or heavy use areas benefit most from a 6-monthly schedule. Think of it like gutter cleaning — skip a year and you’ll notice the difference.

Light-use lawns without pets can stretch to 18–24 months.

No — and pressure washing artificial turf can cause damage. High-pressure water dislodges rubber crumb infill, can lift the backing from the ground, and damages synthetic fibres, especially on older turf.

More critically, it doesn’t address uric acid crystals at all. The smell returns within days. Professional enzyme treatment is the only method that permanently eliminates the crystals themselves rather than just moving the infill around.

In most cases, yes. The Roll&Comb 502E-AU is specifically designed to lift and rejuvenate flattened synthetic grass fibres. It works well on the majority of turf types and pile heights across Perth’s residential market.

Very old turf (10+ years) with physically degraded or brittle fibres may have areas that can’t fully recover — we’ll tell you honestly on the day. But the majority of residential lawns that look dead and flat respond very well and come back looking significantly fuller.

Absolutely — and it’s the most efficient way to book. If you’re already on our schedule for window cleaning, solar panels or gutters, we can add turf restoration to the same visit. One trip, one invoice, better value. Just mention it when you get in touch.
